Kamilah Tom

Kamilah Tom is a fearless journalist, a passionate storyteller that is eager to unveil to the world stories that may have been hidden, untold or are underreported. 

She was born and raised in San Francisco but resides in Washington, D.C. where she is refining her craft at the distinguished Howard University. She is a junior broadcast journalism major in the Cathy Hughes’ School of Communication. 

The first generation college student aspires to be an international correspondent who seeks and reports the truth as a catalyst for justice.

Natalie Elliott

Natalie Elliott is a senior Journalism major at California Lutheran University with a minor in Global Studies. She is currently studying abroad in South Africa learning about social and political transformation, and journalism.

Natalie is passionate about travel, media, and storytelling. You can usually find her 30,000 feet in the air or on an open freeway.

Francine Barchett

Francine Barchett is a junior at Cornell University double-majoring in 1) Development Sociology and 2) International Agriculture and Rural Development. Passionate about the intersections of food security, agriculture, and politics, Francine helps plan and execute World Food Prize youth food institutes. She also loves travel blogging, running, and doing agricultural research in both India and Southern Africa.

Corey D. Smith

Corey D. Smith is a senior sociology major, journalism minor attending Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.

Corey is seeking to focus on Black queer identity within the South African context, while also engaging the many forms of masculinity that are at play. Corey decided to participate in this program based off a recommendation as well as the immediate focus on social policy.

As a first generation college student, he believes it is incumbent upon him to be an example of excellence for his family. Traveling abroad is a major step in that process.

Kamal Morgan

Kamal Morgan is an Africana Studies major at the College of Wooster  in Wooster, Ohio.

Kamal is interested in Critical Race Theory, hip-hop culture, masculinity and how they all overlap to provide a lens into our society and black culture . He saw the opportunity to go to South Africa and not only discover the rich history, but continue to comprehend racial identity and culture while refining his writing skills in journalism.

An avid reader of books on race, hip-hop, teen fiction, and James Baldwin.

Desi LaPoole

A third year journalism major at the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio, Desi’s goals are to enter the journalism field as her career. She has been involved with her college’s student run newspaper, The Wooster Voice since her first year, and has been appointed as the editor in chief for the upcoming 2019-20 school year. Her interests are in social justice and human interest stories, and enjoys feature-style journalism.

Reporting South Africa is produced by US college and university students on an SIT Study Abroad program called “South Africa: Social and Political Transformation”. They are mentored by veteran journalists in a program applying technology and global consciousness to produce high-impact journalism on vital social issues.

Reporting South Africa strives to be a reliable resource for news and information about South Africa.
